Dear Marci, My mother is too frail to leave the house. Dear Tom, Medicare will cover your mother's home health care if she meets Medicare's definition of "homebound," needs skilled nursing care on an intermittent or part-time basis or physical or speech therapy (with a continued need for occupational therapy) and meets a few other requirements. Your mother should ask her doctor whether he thinks she might qualify for Medicare home health benefit.

Do you need individual counseling? Call the Medicare Rights Center's consumer hotline at 800-333-4114, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. A Medicare counselor will be happy to answer your question. You can also call your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for personal counseling on Medicare benefits, rights and options. Call Social Security (800-772-1213) for questions about enrolling in Medicare or applying for Extra Help! According to a 2008 study funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, one in 10 older adults with Medicare reports drinking more alcohol than is recommended—consuming more than 30 drinks per month, or drinking four or more drinks on any day in a typical month.
